“Notes on Strokes”
THE DICKSON LECTURE:
IEvery year, three retired UCR faculty are awarded Edward A. Dickson Professorships to support their research, teaching, or public service activities. In October 2024, Eric Barr gave a
lecture entitled THINKING LIKE AN ACTOR, to support his research and community service activities.
Thinking like an Actor
Eric Barr taught directing and acting, and served as chair of the Department of Theatre at UC Riverside, from 1975 to 2013. He suffered a massive heart infection after surgery in 2013, which led to devastating strokes. Barr’s Dickson Lecture examines the connections between acting and recovery from life-changing events and his use of actor training to help reconstruct himself after losing speech, movement, and many cognitive abilities.
